Life story

A Witness for Rebecca Nurse

Rebecca Prince, stepdaughter of John Gedney, married in Salem, Massachusetts, in September 1652. In 1680 she and her husband hosted the newly arrived minister George Burroughs and his wife Hannah for nine months, and Rebecca gave Hannah cloth to make clothing for the family, recalling later that the couple's marriage seemed troubled and that Burroughs treated his wife harshly despite her devotion. In 1692, during the Salem witch trials, Rebecca and her husband testified about the deaths of their own daughter and son-in-law and spoke in defense of the accused Rebecca Nurse's good character. The family joined the newly independent Salem Village church in 1689.
