Dorchester's Surveyor

George Weeks emigrated from Devonshire, England, to Massachusetts in 1635, sailing with the Reverend Richard Mather, and settled in Dorchester, where he worked as a surveyor and farmer and became a freeman in 1640. He was one of seventy townsmen who in 1641 signed an agreement conveying Thompson's Island to Dorchester for use as a school, reflecting his own recorded advocacy for free public education, and served as one of the town's selectmen in the mid-1640s. Contemporaries described him as “a man of high estimation” from “a religious family.” George died December 28, 1650; his estate — including surveying instruments, weapons, farm tools, livestock, and a well-stocked household — was appraised at over 255 pounds.
