Life story

Restoring the Old Names

William Weeks was born around 1628 in England, the son of George Weeks, and served his town for decades as clerk of writs and registrar of births, marriages, and deaths beginning in 1674 — in that role he restored the older practice of naming months rather than numbering them, a small act of resistance to the Puritan custom of avoiding “heathen” month names. He served as fence-viewer, took the freeman's oath in 1665, and in 1664 joined his brothers in petitioning the General Court to confirm the colony's traditional rights and privileges. William wrote his will in December 1677 and died that same month; his estate, including silver spoons, pewter, books, and livestock, was appraised at nearly 209 pounds.
