Life story

From Mayo to Syracuse, by Way of England

Mary D. Hughes was born around 1840 in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick Hughes and Mary Durkin, and moved with her family to Lancaster, England, as a child before emigrating to Syracuse, New York, around 1859–1866. She married Dominick E. Rafferty and lived in the same Harrison Street house for over four decades, unable to read or write throughout her life. Mary died there on March 29, 1911, and was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery following a funeral at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
