Married Dominick E. Rafferty about 1864 and raised Anna (1864), Dominick, Nellie, Aggie, William, Sadie, and John on Harrison Street.

1890s–1900s

Lost her brother Thomas in 1890, her son John in 1899, and her brother James in 1900. Widowed in January 1902.

1910s

Died at home at 606 Harrison Street on 29 March 1911.

Life story

From Mayo to Syracuse, by Way of England

Mary D. Hughes was born around 1840 in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick Hughes and Mary Durkin. Her brothers and sisters Catherine, Thomas, and John were born in Balla parish in the 1840s, but when Mary was a child the family moved to England, where James and Annie were born in Warrington, Lancashire, in the mid-1850s and Lawrence about 1860. Mary came to Syracuse, New York, about 1859, and much of her family came too.

About 1864 she married Dominick E. Rafferty, a laborer from Balla. Their children were Anna (born in December 1864, Meghan's 2x-great-grandmother), Dominick, Ellen (Nellie), Agnes (Aggie), William, Sarah (Sadie), and John; Dominick also had two older daughters, Bridget and Mary, from an earlier marriage. The family lived on Harrison Street for more than forty years, while Dominick bought up houses and lots around the city. Mary never learned to read or write. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and a member of Branch No. 36 of the C.R.B.A.

The 1890s and 1900s brought a string of losses. Her brother Thomas died in 1890 after slipping and hitting his head; her son John died in 1899; and in 1900 her brother James drowned in the Oswego River after falling from a boat. Her brother Lawrence married Dominick's daughter Mary. In December 1900 Dominick signed their house at 606 Harrison Street over to her and left her the income from all his property for her lifetime, and in January 1902 he died. Mary's health failed for the last year and a half of her life; she had diabetes, and a fall a few weeks before the end made it worse. She died at home on March 29, 1911, at about seventy, and after a funeral at the Cathedral she was buried beside Dominick at St. Agnes Cemetery.
