Life story

County Mayo to Syracuse

Anthony James Farrell was baptized on February 17, 1855, in Keelogues Parish, County Mayo, Ireland, with David Farrell and Maria Geraghty standing as sponsors. He came to Syracuse, New York, from County Mayo “at an early age,” sometime in the early 1870s, and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1879.

Decades in the Clothing Trade

Anthony spent most of his working life with Danziger Brothers, a Syracuse wholesale clothing firm, climbing from shipping clerk and stock clerk in the early 1880s to salesman by 1888, a position he held there for over a decade. After 1900 he continued in the trade as a traveling salesman — a “commercial traveler” in the language of the day — representing clothing lines on the road until shortly before his death, and belonged to the Commercial Travelers Association. He inherited property on Orange Street from his aunt, Mary Brennan, in stages between 1885 and 1895, eventually selling it in 1900, and in 1912 bought a substantial ten-or-eleven-room house with oak finish and hardwood floors on Fitch Street, where he lived out his life.

A Dispute Over a Dying Horse

One vivid episode survives from January 1906: Anthony woke to find an abandoned horse lying on his front steps, having slipped on ice and broken its hip before being dragged there. A crowd gathered, and when the SPCA's O. R. Casey arrived to put the animal down, Anthony objected to having it shot on his own front walk. “I told Casey that he shouldn't shoot the horse on my front walk, but to drag it out to the curb and shoot it there,” he told a reporter afterward. “He asked me what I had to say about it and I told him that I owned the place. He said that didn't make any difference... I said: ‘I suppose if he was inside the house you'd shoot him the same.’ He said: ‘I'd shoot him if he was in your parlor.’” Casey shot the horse where it lay. Anthony, furious, tried to consult a lawyer about suing but let the matter drop when he couldn't reach one.

Civic Life and Death

Anthony was active in Syracuse's Irish Catholic community — a trustee of the Hess Council of the Catholic Benevolent Legion, a member of the Holy Name Society at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and, in 1913, a $20 donor to a Democratic mayoral campaign. He married Anna Hughes Rafferty in Syracuse on January 28, 1891. In his 1921 will he provided first for his debts and funeral expenses, then left everything to his wife with instructions to raise their two youngest sons to adulthood before the estate was divided among all the children, and named his son James as executor. Anthony died at home in Syracuse on March 3, 1924, at seven in the morning, and was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery two days later.
