Life story

A Laborer on Orange Street

Patrick A. Hughes was born around 1808–1819 in County Mayo, Ireland, and married Mary Durkin on April 22, 1841, in Balla Parish. The couple lived for a time in Warrington, Lancashire, England, before settling in Syracuse, New York, where Patrick worked as a laborer and, in 1869, purchased a home on Orange Street for $900. Unable to read or write, he nonetheless built up enough property to leave a formal will, signed March 1, 1884, providing for his wife and children in turn and naming his wife executrix. Patrick died in Syracuse in the spring of 1884 or 1885.
