Life story

A Syracuse Tailoress

Anna Hughes Rafferty was born on December 15, 1864, in Onondaga County, New York, the daughter of Dominick E. Rafferty and Mary Hughes, and worked as a tailoress before marrying Anthony James Farrell on January 28, 1891. She lived for over thirty years in the same house on Fitch Street in Syracuse.

Community Life

Anna was a longtime officer of the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association's Syracuse branch, serving as vice-president and then, from 1915, president, and belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Ladies Auxiliary of the House of Providence. She helped fill Christmas gift bags for orphans at St. Vincent's Asylum for years running. Anna died at home in Syracuse on September 12, 1946, and was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery.
