Life story

A Syracuse Tailoress

Anna Hughes Rafferty was born on December 15, 1864, in Onondaga County, New York, the daughter of Dominick E. Rafferty and Mary Hughes. She grew up in a large family: brothers Dominick, William, and John, sisters Nellie, Aggie, and Sadie, and two older half-sisters, Bridget and Mary. In 1880, at fifteen, she was already working as a tailoress, and in 1888 she was still a tailoress, living on Harrison Street in Syracuse.

Wife and Mother

On January 28, 1891, Anna married Anthony James Farrell, a salesman for the Danziger Brothers clothing firm. Their daughter Mary Alice, called Alice, was born in March 1892, followed by Helen, Florence, James, John, and Anthony. From 1896 the family lived at 235 Tallman Street, and in 1912 they moved to 106 Fitch Street, a big house with oak finish and hardwood floors that was Anna's home for the rest of her life.

Anna gave much of her time to Catholic charities. Year after year, in 1897, 1901, 1903, 1906, and 1912, she helped fill Christmas gift bags for the children of St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum. She was elected first vice-president of Branch No. 30 of the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association in 1910 and 1912 and became its president in 1915. She also belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Ladies Auxiliary of the House of Providence.

Widowhood

Anthony died in 1924, and his will left everything to Anna, asking her to see their two youngest sons through to the age of twenty-one. She kept the Fitch Street house, which was valued at $12,000 in 1930, when her niece Agnes Ryan was living with her. In July 1934 Anna gathered the family at Barnum's Three Rivers, near Syracuse, for a reunion: her children Florence, James, and Helen and her husband, Clarence Clarke, her sister Sadie, and Alice and Ambrose Dee.

Anna lived to be eighty-one. In May 1946 she was still acting as executrix of the will of her brother-in-law, Lawrence P. Hughes. She died at home on Fitch Street on September 12, 1946, and was buried beside Anthony at St. Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse.
