Life story

A Syracuse Matriarch

Johanna Ryan was born around 1833–1836 in Ireland and settled in Syracuse's First Ward, where she married Patrick Dee and, though unable to read or write herself, built up a modest portfolio of rental property that she carefully divided among her children in a detailed 1903 will. Johanna died at her home on Turtle Street in Syracuse on October 4, 1905, having attended her last Mass at St. John the Baptist Church three days before.
