Life story

The Dee Brothers

Patrick J. Dee was born on September 16, 1859, in Onondaga County, New York, and baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Syracuse. As a young man he and his brother David ran Dee Brothers, an ice-dealing and garbage-collection business that won city contracts in the late 1880s — though the Board of Health repeatedly cited them for leaving unsightly, odorous heaps of trash at the dumping grounds.

Twenty-Eight Years in the Fire Department

Patrick joined the Syracuse Fire Department in January 1892 and served for nearly three decades, moving between engine and hook-and-ladder companies. His career had real dangers: in 1898 he fell twenty feet through a collapsing floor while fighting a major fire on Walton Street, climbing out through the wreckage himself; in 1908 he found a woman dead in her kitchen after she caught fire lighting a lamp, and wrapped her body in a fire blanket to await the undertaker; and in 1912 he stabilized a ladder with his bare hands after a lieutenant fell from the top of it. He married Julia A. Hogan at St. John the Baptist Church on June 8, 1892, and retired on pension from the department in 1920.

Death

Patrick died at home in Syracuse on May 4, 1921, after a violent coughing fit brought on by a minor cold triggered heart failure.
