Life story

A Syracuse Railway Clerk

Ambrose Patrick Dee was born on May 17, 1893, in Syracuse, New York, the son of Patrick J. Dee and Julia Hogan. After business school he worked his way up through the local transit company — stenographer, chief clerk, inspector, and by 1918 station master for the Syracuse Rapid Transit Railroad (later New York State Railways) — before a brief stint with the New York Central Railroad. He married Mary Alice Farrell at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse on October 12, 1915.

A Pittsburgh Candle Salesman

Around 1920 the family moved to the Pittsburgh area, where Ambrose spent the rest of his career, nearly forty years, as a salesman for the Will & Baumer Candle Company, working out of his Mount Lebanon home in his later years. He was active for decades in the Knights of Columbus' Pittsburgh Council, organizing dance and card parties through the 1920s, and kept up the Dee and Farrell families' tradition of summer visits back to Syracuse for weddings and reunions. Ambrose died at home in Mount Lebanon on April 21, 1957.
