Life story

A Syracuse Inheritance

Julia A. Hogan was born around 1864–1866 in Syracuse, New York, and raised from childhood by her aunt and uncle, William and Margaret Mara, inheriting their Free Street house and its furnishings when her uncle died in 1883. She worked as a tailoress before marrying Patrick J. Dee at St. John the Baptist Church on June 8, 1892.

Parish Life

Julia was active for decades in St. John the Baptist Church's social and fundraising life — organizing the parish's large annual summer picnics, a church fair, and a welcome-home picnic for the pastor returning from Rome — and belonged to the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association. Her son William served in the First World War; she received word in May 1919 that he was coming home safely. Julia died at her home on Park Street in Syracuse on September 15, 1932; her nephew, a priest, presided over her funeral Mass.
