Born about 1864–1866 in Syracuse, New York. By 1875 she was living with her aunt and uncle, William and Margaret Mara, on Free Street.

1880s

Inherited the Mara house on Free Street and its furnishings in 1883. Worked as a tailoress.

1890s

Married Patrick J. Dee, a Syracuse fireman, on 8 June 1892. Children Ambrose (1893), Will (1895), Gregory, and Kathryn (1899) were born, and in 1896 the family bought a house on Center Street.

1900s–1910s

Lost her son Gregory in 1900; Bernard (1901) and Mary (1906) were born. A leader of St. John the Baptist parish picnics and fairs. Her son Will came home from the First World War in 1919.

1920s–1930s

Widowed in 1921. Moved to Park Street in 1924, where she died on 15 September 1932.

Life story

Raised by the Maras

Julia A. Hogan was born in Syracuse, New York, around 1864 to 1866; some records call her Johanna. From at least 1875 she lived with her aunt and uncle, William and Margaret Mara, at 108 Free Street, a lot William had bought in 1855. She went to school, and in February 1883 she inherited the Free Street house and all its furnishings from her uncle. She went on living there, working as a tailoress in 1888–1890, until her marriage. She had a brother named James.

The Fireman's Wife

On June 8, 1892, Julia married Patrick J. Dee, a fireman who had joined the Syracuse Fire Department that January, at St. John the Baptist Church. Their son Ambrose (Meghan's great-grandfather) was born in 1893, followed by Will in 1895, Gregory, Kathryn in 1899, Bernard in 1901, and Mary in 1906. Gregory died in 1900, at about three. In 1896 Julia and Patrick bought a house at 404 East Center Street, and in 1903 Julia sold the old Free Street property.

St. John the Baptist parish was the center of Julia's life outside the home. In 1904 she helped organize the parish's annual picnic at Lakeside Park, where 10,000 people were expected, and in 1908 a fundraising fair at Academy Hall with music, contests, a country store, flowers, and candy. In 1913 she helped arrange a picnic on South Bay to welcome the pastor home from a pilgrimage to Rome, and in 1916 she was president of the dining room committee for the parish picnic, with its baseball game, three-legged races, fat men's race, and a contest for a pet lamb and a gold watch, directing the serving of dinner from five to eight. She also belonged to the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association.

Her son Will served in the First World War. In May 1919 Julia received a telegram saying he would soon be coming home.

Later Years

Patrick died suddenly in May 1921. In 1923 Julia sold the Center Street house, and from 1924 she rented a house at 1707 Park Street. She died there of heart disease on September 15, 1932. Her nephew, the Reverend Charles Dee, said her funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Church, and she was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse.
