Johann “John” Bedesem was born on January 1, 1821, in Prüm, then part of Prussia's Lower Rhine province, and worked as a shoemaker there before emigrating to Philadelphia, where he continued the trade for the rest of his working life. He married Anna Maria Spanier in Prüm on February 24, 1846, before the family's emigration, and last appears in the Philadelphia records around 1871.
