Life story

An Ontario Blacksmith

Thomas Lobb was born on June 18, 1857, in Goderich Township, Huron County, Ontario, to George Lobb, who had come from Cornwall, England. He apprenticed as a blacksmith under Bill Murch in Holmesville, Ontario, where he met his future wife, Lorena Gill Moore, while the two of them were boarding at the same house. After his apprenticeship ended in 1883 he worked briefly in Seaforth before opening his own shop in Gowrie, then bought out his old master Murch's Holmesville shop in 1888, advertised as “a good workman, and a man worthy of the liberal patronage of the public.” Horseshoeing was his specialty — one of his regular customers was a farmer named Kepple Disney, uncle of the future animator Walt Disney — and he married Lorena at Fullarton Corners on May 21, 1884.

West to Vancouver

An economic depression closed Thomas's Ontario shop, and in late May 1893 the family — by his daughter Raye's account, “poor as churchmice” — set out on a five-week train journey to Vancouver, British Columbia, where Thomas's brother Will had already arranged work for him. Within weeks of arriving he was kicked by a horse and broke his leg, losing his new job before he'd properly started it, but he recovered and spent the next quarter-century as one of Mount Pleasant's established blacksmiths, running shops under a rotating cast of partnerships — Lobb & Muir, Lobb & Carlyle, Lobb, Rouse & Co. — that built wagons, shod horses and oxen, made ice creepers for Klondike-bound prospectors, and in 1899 built Vancouver General Hospital's first horse-drawn ambulance, beating out three competing bidders.

Farming and a Final Trade in Rosedale

In 1919 Thomas moved the family back to the Chilliwack area and took up dairy farming on cleared and stump-covered land in Rosedale, with his son Laurie doing much of the heaviest work — clearing stumps with blasting powder, milking eight cows twice a day. Farming brought its share of bad luck, including a potato crop in 1926 that arrived at market just after American growers had already sold theirs, but that same year Thomas and Laurie bought the old Rosedale Machine Shop and returned to blacksmithing, becoming one of the first shops in the district to install oxyacetylene welding equipment. Thomas retired in October 1930 and left the business — soon renamed the Rosedale Welding and Blacksmith Shop — in Laurie's hands, though he kept visiting on Saturdays to see what was new until his health no longer allowed it. Laurie later wrote of working beside his father for nearly ten years: “He was not the greatest businessman, he was not the greatest craftsman the world had ever known, but whenever he made a transaction and he gave you his word, it was graven in stone as far as he was concerned. He was a friend to everyone.”

Faith and Community

In his later years in Rosedale, Thomas became a fixture of the community's religious and civic life, teaching the United Church's — and later the Advent Christian Church's — adult Bible class for roughly a decade, giving frequent talks and addresses at Sunday school socials, and helping to organize a local “Helping Hand Society” to create jobs and clothing for the needy in 1915.

Death

Thomas died at his home in Rosedale on February 10, 1933; by local account, the roof of his old Mount Pleasant blacksmith shop in Vancouver caved in that same day.
