Life story

An Irish Widow in Ontario

Mary Holmes was born around 1821 in Ireland — the records differ between Kilkenny and Tipperary — and emigrated to Canada around 1831–1846, first marrying a Mr. White and working with him in service to an Episcopalian minister in Toronto. After his death she kept house for her brothers near Goderich, Ontario, where she met and, on June 18, 1854, married her neighbor George Lobb. Her niece remembered her as “a forceful type of person” who spoke with an Irish brogue. Mary died at her daughter Keziah's home in Colborne, Ontario, on June 3, 1886; her son-in-law was injured in an accident on the way home from buying her coffin.
