Life story
Ontario Roots and a Blacksmith's Courtship
Lorena Gill Moore was born on April 13, 1866, in Perth County, Ontario, to Richard Moore, who had come from Devonshire, England, and Eliza Frances Dickenson. As a young woman she worked briefly at Bill Murch's blacksmith shop in Holmesville, where she met the shop's apprentice, Thomas Lobb, while the two of them boarded at the same house. They married at Fullarton Corners on May 21, 1884.
A Family on the Move
Lorena followed Thomas through a string of Ontario blacksmithing towns before the family's 1893 move west to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she helped nurse him through a broken leg soon after their arrival, with her sister Adeline's help. She raised a large family through the family's Vancouver years and the moves that followed to Chilliwack and finally Rosedale. When her son Harry left for the First World War in 1915, she gave him her diamond ring to carry with him — so that, she told him, he would have to come back to return it to her.
Rosedale Years
In Rosedale, Lorena kept a famously loud police whistle that she would blow from the yard to call her children home, and the household saw a constant stream of visits from her grown children and their families, who had scattered to Vancouver, Ferndale, and Nooksack, Washington. She died in her sleep at home in Rosedale on April 26, 1947, at eighty-one.
