Life story

A Cornish Farmer in Ontario

George Lobb was born in August 1813 in St. Teath, Cornwall, England, and emigrated to Canada around 1843–1849, eventually leasing and then buying eighty-eight acres on the Maitland Concession in Goderich Township, Ontario, where he built a log cabin and farmed for the rest of his life. He married Mary Holmes in Goderich on June 18, 1854. His will, revised twice in his final years, carefully divided his estate among his children with annual payments rather than lump sums, and provided for his wife's comfortable keep. His obituary described him as “of a quiet and unobtrusive disposition,” and his niece remembered him as “a gentle soft-spoken man.” George died in Goderich on January 24, 1884.
