A Maine Fisherman's Land Fight

John Palmer was born around 1640 and settled in Dunstan, Maine, working as a fisherman and receiving fifty acres of land in 1662 as part of his wife's dowry — land he later had to petition Governor Andros to defend after a neighbor tried to illegally claim it, arguing he had cleared and lived on it by hand for a decade before King Philip's War drove him off it. John served as Dunstan's selectman in 1671 and spent the war years in Boston, formally admitted as a resident there in 1682, before eventually returning to Maine. He died in July 1707, leaving everything to his wife Elizabeth.
