Life story
The Salt Boiler
Patrick Dee was born in Ireland, sometime between about 1820 and 1828 by the varying records, and came to Syracuse, New York, around 1850. On January 25, 1853, he filed his declaration of intent to become a citizen. For most of his working life he was a salt boiler, boiling down brine from the Onondaga salt springs, with stretches as a day laborer in between. In March 1857 he was arrested for drunkenness and let go after paying a fine.
Patrick married Johanna Ryan, and they raised a large family in Syracuse's First Ward: David, Bridget (who became a nun, Mother Mary Rose), Margaret, Mary, Patrick J. (Meghan's 2x-great-grandfather, born in 1859), Bernard, Anna, William, and Daniel. In 1858 Patrick bought the north half of a lot in Block 16 in the old village of Salina for $900, and from about 1857 the family lived at 102 Free Street. By 1870 the property was valued at $1,200. In 1865 he paid $600 for Fine Salt Lot 79 on the Salt Spring Reservation, which ran from Free Street back to the Cut Canal, and in 1877 he was listed in salt manufacturing at the corner of Free and Spring Streets. In 1878 a lawsuit brought by Charles A. Stillwell against Patrick, Johanna, the Salt Company of Onondaga, and others ended with the sheriff auctioning the salt lot for $500.
Patrick's trade killed him. On October 18, 1879, he died in the First Ward of scalds he had suffered at a salt boiler. His son Patrick J. later became a Syracuse fireman.
