Life story
A Dutchess County Blacksmith's Estate
Nathaniel Mead was born August 16, 1750, and settled in North East, Dutchess County, New York, where he worked as a blacksmith and raised a large family. In his detailed October 1812 will, Nathaniel provided carefully for his wife Mary and his unmarried daughters — Mila, Phebe, Hannah, Samantha, Sarah, Asenath, and Mary Ann — guaranteeing them a share of the house, use of the family's cows and carriage, and income from land sales, while leaving his son Richard the bulk of the farm, his blacksmithing tools, and responsibility for supporting his sisters. Nathaniel died in Dutchess County on March 5, 1816.
