Born in 1828 in Devonshire, England. Came to Canada West, where he taught school at places including Exeter and Brantford. Married Eliza Frances Dickenson, also a teacher, in 1858.

1860s

Settled by 1868 at Gowrie, Fullarton Township, Perth County, where he ran a singing school. Daughter Lorena was born in 1866.

1870s–1880s

Farmed in Fullarton Township and served as township clerk in 1871. A Bible Christian. Appointed postmaster at Gowrie on 1 July 1881 and died later that year.

Life story

A Schoolmaster and Postmaster

Richard Moore was born in 1828 in Devonshire, England. He came to what was then Canada West, where he worked as a schoolteacher and schoolmaster, living at Exeter and at Brantford among other places, and in 1858 he married Eliza Frances Dickenson, a teacher with a first-class Normal School certificate. Their daughters included Lorena (born in 1866, Meghan's 2x-great-grandmother), Adeline, and Ida.

By 1868 the Moores were living at Gowrie, in Fullarton Township, Perth County, where Richard ran a singing school. In 1871 he was the township clerk, and through the 1870s he farmed there. The family belonged to the Bible Christian church. On July 1, 1881, Richard was appointed postmaster of the Gowrie post office, but he died later that year, at about fifty-three, and was buried in the cemetery at Gowrie. Three years later his daughter Lorena married Thomas Lobb, a blacksmith who had set up shop in Gowrie.
