Life story

An Ohio Childhood

Sarah Rowan was born in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio — the records give either May 13 or March 15, 1861 — to the Irish immigrant family of John Rowan and Sarah Cullen. She had at least one sister, Catherine “Katie” Rowan, who married Lewis Heaton; the two sisters' families remained close for the rest of Sarah's life.

Marriage and a Growing Family

Sarah married Amon E. Kelble at St. Brigid's Church in Xenia on October 20, 1891, and the couple settled first in a cottage on Spring Hill before moving through a series of Xenia addresses, finally to 249 South West Street, where they would live for over two decades. In June 1893 the couple hosted a wedding reception at their home for Sarah's sister Katie.

A Life Centered on Family

As her sons Francis and John Kelble grew up, married, and settled in Columbus and Philadelphia, Sarah's later years took on a steady rhythm of visiting and being visited: trips to see Francis's family in Lima and Philadelphia during the First World War, regular holiday gatherings in Xenia at Christmas and Easter for both sons' households, and summers when her grandchildren John and Francis came to stay with her during their school vacation. In September 1917 she and Amon hosted a farewell dinner for three young Xenia men leaving for military training at Chillicothe. Illness became a more frequent visitor in her final years — a bout of flu in 1922, a severe attack of rheumatism in 1924, a hospital stay that November for an operation, and a further illness in 1925 — before a final decline in late 1927. She rallied briefly in mid-November but suffered a relapse, and died at home on South West Street on November 29, 1927, at the age of sixty-six.
