Life story

Laying the Rails

John Rowan was born around 1831–1840 in County Galway, Ireland, and emigrated to the United States around 1851, settling in Xenia, Ohio, where he worked laying track for the Little Miami Railroad — among the workers who set the first rails at the Columbus station — and later as a laborer and coal shoveler. He married Sarah Cullen in Xenia on July 1858. In January 1883 John was charged with assault with intent to kill after a man named James Donovan was left critically injured in a fight; he ultimately pled guilty to the lesser charge of assault and battery and was fined. In his later years he grew and sold celery, tomato, and cabbage plants. John died at home on Locust Street in Xenia on December 2, 1918, and was buried from St. Brigid's Church.
