Born in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland, sometime between about 1832 and 1843. Bought land on Harrison Street, Syracuse, in 1856, and had daughters Bridget and Mary by a first wife.

1860s

Came (or came back) to America around 1860, spent a year in Syracuse and several in Canada, and settled in Syracuse. Married Mary Hughes about 1864; their daughter Anna was born that December. A citizen by 1865.

1870s–1880s

A laborer living on Harrison Street, where children Dominick, Nellie, Aggie, William, Sadie, and John were born. Bought more property on Adams Street (1880), Harrison Street (1882), and Almond Street (1889).

1890s–1900s

Bought two lots on Cedar Street in 1893 and a family plot at St. Agnes Cemetery in 1899. Made his will in December 1900 and died on 14 January 1902.

Life story

From Balla to Syracuse

Dominick E. Rafferty was born in Balla, County Mayo, Ireland; his records give his birth year as anywhere from about 1832 to 1843. According to the census he came to America in 1860, spent his first year in Syracuse, New York, then several years in Canada before settling in Syracuse for good, but a deed shows him buying part of a lot on Harrison Street in Syracuse as early as 1856. He had two daughters, Bridget and Mary, by a first wife whose name is not known. About 1864 he married Mary Hughes, who had also been born in Balla, and he was a citizen by 1865. Their children were Anna (1864, Meghan's 2x-great-grandmother), Dominick, Ellen (Nellie), Agnes (Aggie), William, Sarah (Sadie), and John.

Dominick worked as a laborer for more than thirty years and was a stonemason by 1900. The census recorded him as unable to read or write in 1865, 1875, and 1880, but by 1900 he could do both. Out of a laborer's wages he steadily bought Syracuse property: three houses on his first Harrison Street lot, a lot on Adams Street with two houses bought for $700 in 1880, the house at 606 Harrison Street for $500 in 1882, a lot on Almond Street for $2,000 in 1889, and two lots on Cedar Street for $4,450 in 1893. The family lived on Harrison Street throughout. He belonged to St. Mary's Church.

In January 1899 Dominick bought a family plot at St. Agnes Cemetery for $244; his son John had died that month. One October night in 1900 he gave his family a fright by not coming home, the first night in many years he had spent away; he had only been visiting a friend near the House of Providence. That December he signed 606 Harrison Street over to his wife and made his will, asking that a gravestone be bought for the family plot, leaving Mary the rents and income from all his property for her lifetime, and then dividing it among the children, with $500 extra for his daughter Mary. Any child who questioned the will would lose their share. Dominick died of heart failure on January 14, 1902, and was buried in the family plot at St. Agnes.
