A Loudoun County Landholder

Philip Baker was born around 1716–1720 and moved from Pennsylvania to Loudoun County, Virginia, around 1732, where he spent the rest of his life steadily buying, trading, and selling farmland along the branches of the Catoctin — including a 1765 purchase with a partner, a 1772 lease with his sons Daniel and William from the prominent Fairfax family, and a final 150-acre purchase in 1785, the year before his death. In his January 1786 will, Philip left five pounds to his eldest son Daniel and directed that his remaining land be divided evenly among all ten of his children, with one son keeping the property intact and compensating his siblings for their shares; his wife was to hold his personal property until their youngest child reached adulthood. Philip died in Lovettsville, Virginia, in 1786.
