Life story

From Halifax to Chester

Mary Jane Farrar was born in February 1850 in Halifax, Yorkshire, and about 1869 she married Newton Greenwood, a worsted weaver. Their children were James Edward (Ben's 2x-great-grandfather), born about 1870, Amy (1871), Florence (Florrie, 1877), and Gertrude (1887). In 1891 the family lived at 8 Plymouth Grove in St. Augustine's parish, Halifax, with Newton a weaving foreman and James an overlooker.

In 1896 the family emigrated to Pennsylvania, where Newton and James found work as loom bosses in the Chester mills. In 1900 Mary Jane was living with Newton at 405 Flower Street in Chester, the house where her granddaughter Ida had been born three years before, and that year her daughters Amy and Florrie were married in Chester. From 1904 the family home was 1824 West 4th Street. When and where Mary Jane died has not been found.
