Life story

Halifax to Philadelphia

Clara Evelyn Rawson was born on August 30, 1872, on Stead Street in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the daughter of James Rawson and Mary Ellen Widdop, and like her future husband James Greenwood went to work in the local worsted-weaving trade, recorded as a weaver in 1891. She emigrated to the United States with James in 1896, and the two were married soon after.

A Philadelphia Household

Clara and James raised their family in Philadelphia over the following decades, moving through a series of rented and later owned homes — her sister Sarah, who had followed them from England, lived with the family for a time after her own arrival around 1910. Clara died at home on East Thayer Street on October 13, 1941, at nine-ten in the morning, aged sixty-nine.
