A Rohatyn Family

Abraham Josel Poczter lived in Rohatyn, a town in the Austrian province of Galicia (today in Ukraine). Almost all that is known of him comes from the records of his children. His wife was Feige Chaje, and their daughters included Chana (Ben's great-great-grandmother), Hudel, who married Ire Schwartz, and Henie, who married first Tanchem Mauzer and then Kalman Schwarz. Two sons, Leib Mechel, born in August 1866, and Hersch Mendel, born in May 1869, were probably also Feige Chaje's, though the records leave their mother uncertain. With another wife, Rochli, Abraham had a daughter, Sara Malke, who married Samuel Hersch Jung.

In 1866 the family lived at house number 170 in Rohatyn, and by 1869 at number 230. Abraham died in Rohatyn in 1887. His granddaughter Clara, born four years later, was given his wife's name, Feige Chaje, and in 1920 she left Rohatyn for New York.
