Feivel Zahler

1880s–1890s

A tailor in Rohatyn, Galicia, married to Chana Poczter. Their children included Chaim Juda (1880), Clara (1891), Harry (1895), Rosa (about 1897), and Markus (1898).

1900s–1910s

Lost his son Chaim Juda to tuberculosis in 1902. Daughter Yetta was born about 1901. Clara married Harry Weber and stayed in Rohatyn with her children after Harry left for New York in 1912.

1920s

Saw Clara leave for New York in 1920 and several more children marry in America. Still working as a tailor when he died in Rohatyn of a heart attack on 23 June 1928, at about seventy.

The Tailor of Rohatyn

Feivel Zahler was born around 1858 and spent his working life as a tailor in Rohatyn, in Austrian Galicia (now in Ukraine). He is recorded there as a tailor in July 1880, when his son Chaim Juda was born, again in December 1898, when his son Markus was born, and still in 1928. He married Chana Poczter, and their children included Chaim Juda, Joseph, Feige Chaje (Clara, born in 1891), Harry (1895), Rosa (about 1897), Markus (1898), and Yetta (about 1901). Chaim Juda died of tuberculosis in 1902, at twenty-two.

Clara married Harry Weber and was raising their children in Rohatyn when Harry sailed for New York in 1912. She waited out the First World War there and joined him in 1920. Other children also made their way to New York: Harry Zahler married in Manhattan in 1923 and Yetta in 1924, while Rosa married in Rohatyn in 1923. In American records he appears as Philip Zahler. Feivel himself stayed in Rohatyn, and he died there of a heart attack on June 23, 1928, at about seventy.
