Life story
A Champion Swimmer
Ida Mary Greenwood was born on February 22, 1897, in South Chester, Pennsylvania, the daughter of English weaving-mill immigrants James Edward Greenwood and Clara Evelyn Rawson. A gifted athlete, she represented the Kensington YWCA in competitive diving, winning third place in a citywide fancy-diving championship in 1917, and swam for Temple University's team, working summers as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at Madison Square Garden in New York and, later, as a model and saleswoman at Lord & Taylor's Fifth Avenue store — unusually independent work for a young woman of her era who also completed two years of college and graduated from Temple's teaching program.
Decades at Strawbridge's
Ida taught for two years at St. Joseph's Academy after marrying Paul Peter Bedesem on May 5, 1924, then spent twenty-one years, from 1951 to her retirement in 1972, working in millinery and later men's furnishings at Strawbridge and Clothier's Jenkintown store, repeatedly recognized by management for outstanding customer service. She was an accomplished amateur gardener, winning prizes for her rose arrangements at the Philadelphia Rose Show and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for years running, and travelled to England and made repeated winter trips to Florida in her later life.
Later Years
Ida died at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania, on February 7, 1978. Her detailed will and estate inventory — silver dollars dating to 1878, commemorative porcelain plates, a diamond ring, savings bonds — reflect a lifelong habit of careful collecting; she was buried at Northwood Cemetery following a Mass at Holy Angels Church.
