William Darby

Born 1693 in Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey. He married 1721, in Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey. He died February 26, 1775, in Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey.

Founding Scotch Plains

William Darby was born in 1693 in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, son of the earlier William Darby, and became one of the community's leading citizens: he donated land for its meetinghouse and cemetery in the 1720s, helped found its Baptist church in 1747, serving as its first ruling elder and acting deacon, and later donated land for the town's first school, built on what was then called Darby Road. In his February 1774 will, William divided his considerable landholdings among his sons William and John, with smaller bequests to his other children and grandchildren. He died in Scotch Plains on February 26, 1775.
