Life story
An East Jersey Petitioner
William Darby was born February 28, 1646, in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, and settled around 1684 in Elizabeth, in what is now Union County, New Jersey, where he traded parcels of land through the 1680s and '90s. He was one of 230 colonists who signed the Remonstrance of the Inhabitants of East Jersey, a formal protest against the colony's proprietary landlords. William settled finally in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, mortgaging land there in 1701, the year he died.
