Chana Poczter

1860s–1870s

The daughter of Abraham Josel Poczter and Feige Chaje of Rohatyn, Galicia, with sisters Hudel and Henie and a half-sister, Sara Malke.

1880s–1900s

Married the tailor Feivel Zahler and raised a large family in Rohatyn, including Chaim Juda (1880), Clara (1891), Harry (1895), Rosa, Markus (1898), and Yetta.

1910s–1920s

Saw her daughter Clara leave for New York in 1920, followed by other children. Widowed in 1928.

A Rohatyn Family

Chana Poczter was the daughter of Abraham Josel Poczter and Feige Chaje, of Rohatyn in Austrian Galicia. She had sisters named Hudel and Henie, a half-sister, Sara Malke, from her father's marriage to a woman named Rochli, and probably brothers Leib Mechel (born 1866) and Hersch Mendel (born 1869), though the records leave their mother uncertain. Her own daughter Clara was given her mother's name, Feige Chaje.

Chana married Feivel Zahler, a Rohatyn tailor, and she is recorded with him there when their son Chaim Juda was born in July 1880 and when their son Markus was born in December 1898. Their other children included Joseph, Clara (1891), Harry (1895), Rosa, and Yetta. Chaim Juda died of tuberculosis in 1902. After the First World War several of the children went to New York: Clara in 1920 to rejoin her husband, Harry Weber, and Harry Zahler and Yetta, who both married there. One American record gives her name as Hannah Kaplan. Feivel died in Rohatyn in 1928; when Chana died has not been found.
