Life story
An Elder of Poke Run
John Townsend was born on October 21, 1786, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, the son of Isaac Townsend and Rachel King, and married Elisabeth Shoemaker on April 11, 1811. He worked as both a blacksmith and a farmer in Washington Township, building a substantial property along the way — valued at $5,000 by 1860 — and served as a ruling elder of the Poke Run Presbyterian Church. John died in Westmoreland County on March 21, 1869.
