Life story

A Household Known for Hospitality

William Dickinson was born in England around 1799. With his wife, Jane Woods, he farmed in King Township, York County, Canada West, where the 1851 census found the family, Wesleyan Methodists, in a one-and-a-half-story plank house next to the schoolhouse. By 1861 they lived in a one-and-a-half-story frame house, where five-year-old Susan Lampman was also living, and the census noted that William could not read or write. His household was known for its hospitality toward traveling Methodist preachers.
