Life story

Farming Alone

Catharina Dühr was born on October 14 or 16, 1824, in Taben, in Prussia's Rhine Province, and married Johann Gansemer there on January 28, 1847. The couple emigrated together in 1862, and after Johann's death in 1874 Catharina ran the Iowa farm alone for eight years, appearing as head of household on the tax rolls — the farm in 1879 alone produced fifty tons of hay, hundreds of bushels of corn, oats, and wheat, and butter, eggs, and apples besides. In 1882 she sold the farm to her son-in-law Michael Leineweber for $4,000. Around 1889 she donated a stained-glass window, inscribed with her name, to the newly built Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Sherrill, Iowa. Catharina died at Sherrill's Mound, Iowa, on December 25, 1904.
