Life story
A Millwright on the Rhine
Benjamin Beamer was born around 1704 in the Netherlands, living along the Rhine River, and worked as a millwright and military officer, marrying Jane William around 1729. When his son Henry asked for money to emigrate to America to avoid mandatory military service, Benjamin refused, likely fearing the consequences he might face as an officer for helping his son evade duty. Benjamin died in 1762 in Beemerville, New Jersey — apparently having emigrated himself later in life, in the community that would carry the family name.
