Life story
Fleeing Military Service
Henry Beamer was born around 1732 in the Netherlands and, wanting to avoid seven years of mandatory military service, left home around 1749 against his father's wishes — his father, likely an army officer himself, refused to fund the trip. Henry and seventeen others arranged passage with a ship's captain and spent six months crossing to New Amsterdam. He settled in Sussex County, New Jersey, taking an oath of allegiance there in 1755, before making a six-week wagon journey to Upper Canada around 1780. Henry settled in Louth Township in the Niagara District, steadily acquiring several hundred acres of land there and in Burford Township through the early 1800s. He died in 1833 in Niagara, Rockway Township, Upper Canada.
