Life story
Family Background
Alix was born in 1200, daughter of Constance, Duchess of Brittany, and Guy of Thouars, Constance's third husband and co-ruler; Constance died giving birth to Alix's younger sisters. Alix's half-siblings from Constance's earlier marriage to Geoffrey of England included Arthur I and Eleanor, "the Fair Maid of Brittany."
Path to the Duchy
After Richard I of England's death, a succession struggle broke out between Arthur and King John of England; both Arthur and Eleanor were captured at the Battle of Mirebeau in 1202, and Arthur disappeared, presumed murdered, in John's custody at Château de Falaise in 1203. Fearing John might claim the regency through the still-imprisoned Eleanor, the Breton barons instead recognized the young Alix as Duchess of Brittany.
Regency and Marriage
Her father Guy of Thouars governed as regent until 1206, when King Philip II of France took over that role and arranged her marriage to his own cousin Peter of Dreux rather than the previously planned match with Henry of Penthièvre. Alix and Peter married on January 27, 1213, and Peter paid homage to Philip for the duchy.
Recognition and Rule
In 1214 King John of England formally recognized Alix as Duchess of Brittany, setting aside Eleanor's claim, and by 1218 the English crown acknowledged Alix and Peter as Countess and Earl of Richmond. Real power lay largely with Peter, but Alix's own status as duchess by blood remained the legal foundation of their rule.
Death and Children
Alix died October 21, 1221, at about twenty-one. She and Peter had three children: John I, who succeeded her as duke and later married Blanche of Navarre; Yolande, who married Hugh XI of Lusignan; and Arthur, who died young in 1224. Peter continued to govern Brittany as regent for their son John until 1237.
