1880s–1890s

Raised nine children in Portland, from 1889 at 547 Flanders Street. Lost her son Thomas in 1882 and Joseph as a small child.

1900s

Shared the Flanders Street house with her sister Mary and brothers Thomas and James. Died of stomach cancer on 30 May 1901.

Life story

From Wicklow to Portland

Anna (Annie) Murphy was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, probably around 1851; one record gives January 1860. Her mother's maiden name may have been Lyons. She came to the United States in 1865 and made her way to Portland, Oregon, where she worked as a servant for a wealthy family. Her sister Maggie was in Portland too and married Patrick McFeely; a McFeely cousin, Mary Elizabeth, would one day sell the family the house on NW Glisan Street.

On October 13, 1875, Anna married Cornelius Madigan, an Irish teamster, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Their children came quickly: Thomas in 1876, twins Jack and Joseph in 1878, Margaret (Meghan's great-grandmother) in 1879, Sallie in 1881, and James, Peter, Kate, and William over the next decade. Anna knew hard losses. Joseph died as a small child in 1880, and in August 1882 six-year-old Thomas died of appendicitis at five in the morning.

The House on Flanders Street

In 1880 the Madigans were living at 103 16th Street, and after several moves around the neighborhood they settled in 1889 in the house at 347 F Street, later 547 Flanders Street, a couple of blocks from the Couch firehouse where Cornelius was a volunteer. Anna's sister Maggie died of heart disease in 1886. By 1900 Anna's household included her sister Mary and two brothers, Thomas and James, along with her own children.

Anna developed stomach cancer, and she died on May 30, 1901. Her eldest daughter, Margaret, then twenty-one, took over running the house. Anna was buried at St. Mary's Cathedral Cemetery, and her remains, like all the others there, were later moved to Mount Calvary Cemetery. Her sister Mary lived on in the Flanders Street house until her death in 1913.
