Life story
From County Down to Chilliwack
Anne Jane Todd was born around 1840–1843 near Belfast or Donegal, Ireland, to a Presbyterian family, and married James McConnell in April 1864 in Drumballyroney, County Down. The couple emigrated that same year, settling first in South Monaghan Township near Peterborough, Ontario. In 1873 the family made the long journey west to British Columbia — by train across the United States to San Francisco, then by boat up the coast to Victoria, New Westminster, and finally Chilliwack, where they spent their first night in the home of fellow settler Isaac Kipp. Anne Jane lived out the rest of her life in Chilliwack, worshiping as a Wesleyan Methodist, and died there on October 21, 1904, following an illness during which she was cared for by a neighbor, Mrs. Reeves. Her funeral was well attended.
